In either case, shouldn’t Obama mandate adopt whichever of those two things is helping Cubans to live longer?
Dems had been saying we need socialized medicine because Cuba has it and they live longer. ROFLMAO

Funny….. according to the World Health Organization, Cubans don’t live longer.

Those darn facts keep getting in the way for liberals.

They lie. There are countries that have longer life expectancies than Americans do. Cuba is not among them.

I think it’s their toughness, you have to be tough knowing you have nothing due to Castro but a few miles across the seas lies a land of plenty. You must be tough to live like that. In a communist pit.

It’s probably because of the cigars we aren’t allowed to have.

In any case, I wish all the Dems would move there and leave us alone.

They can’t afford cigarettes, and have to walk everywhere because of the lack of automobiles, they are still a largely agricultural society.

Not to many people sitting in High rise office buildings in HAVANA!

but–let me ask you this–Since the CUBAN government controls the MEDIA in cuba, and controls the doctors in CUBA and controls the CENSUS in CUBA–how do WE believe it when they say their people live LONGER.

Well if you lived in Cuba you would be thin because of the poverty. Unfortunately they do have the best health care system in the world. It makes me sick to even say that a communist country has better health care then the United States.

It is not the health technology. That is only reserved for the political elites and tourists. I would say it is because of the lack of obesity and that they, much like many other industrialized nations, focus on preventative care. It is cheaper and is proven to extend lives. In the US, we focus on cures. Drugs, medical technology to extend life. Think of it this way. Is it easier to prevent cancer or treat it?

It’s well known that obesity is a negative when it comes to longevity. Exercise tends to increase longevity.

Herbert Hoover called for “A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage.” But he wasn’t talking about fried chicken.

Cuba seems to agree with “A chicken in every pot.” But that’s one chicken a week for a family of four. The rest of the week, it’s beans and rice. Beans are great for protein and rice is a good source of carbohydrates. It’s a healthy, if boring, diet. And since there’s not a car in every garage, people in Cuba do a lot of walking and ride their bicycles, so they get a lot of exercise. You don’t see many fat Cubans, especially in Cuba itself. You do see a lot of skinny ones, many of whom are malnourished.

Cubans also don’t drink much alcohol or smoke a lot. They can’t afford either alcohol or cigarettes (or even cigars). They can’t afford much of anything else, either.

If Cuba’s medical system is so good, why did they bring in a Spanish surgeon to operate on Fidel Castro when he became ill a couple of years ago?

According to Wikipedia, the 2008 CIA World Factbook statistics show that the U.S. is in 45th place (out of 221) with an average life expectancy of 78.06, and Cuba is tied for 76th place with an average life expectancy of 75.06.

Even so, you would think that an advanced country like ours should be doing a lot better than Cuba. I’m certain that if we had socialized medicine our life expectancy would be in the range of one of the top 15 countries with life expectancies of over 80. We have 3 problems. (1) People who may or may not have health insurance, who get cancer or other potentially deadly diseases, die because they are denied life saving treatments. (2) People without health insurance will avoid or delay going to the doctor, and their problems turn out to get worse or be life threatening or life shortening. (3) People who may have health insurance (including seniors covered by medicare) cannot afford their prescription drugs and have to choose between rent, food, and their prescriptions, or they take reduced doses to cut costs.

I would recommend watching Michael Moore’s movie Sicko. Perhaps he was wrong when he said that Cubans live longer, but maybe some misguided conservatives would rethink their views if they watched this movie. With socialized medicine (single payer national health insurance without HMO’s or health insurance companies), about 25% of the cost of healthcare that is profit would be eliminated, and there would only be a 3% cost for government administration. For all you conservatives who say that the government would just be wasteful if they ran it, the 3% number is the cost for the government to run Medicare. We would be able to insure more people and provide more benefits for less money. Right now, even if you have health insurance, the only guarantee that you will get the care you need is if you have the money to pay for it yourself.
